Tarleton Alumni Association

The Tarleton Alumni Association established the following scholarships:

  • The Jerry Flemmons Journalism Scholarship was established in 1984 by the Tarleton Alumni Association as a tribute to Mr. Jerry Flemmons. The Drama Scholarship is awarded to a student in good academic standing interested in drama at Tarleton. The Jerry Flemmons Journalism Scholarship is awarded to a communications major. Mr. Flemmons was born in Stephenville. He attended Tarleton and was a small college All-American quarterback. Mr. Flemmons joined the staff of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1963. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Wichita Falls tornado in 1979. He was a contributing editor to Southern Living magazine and authored several books. He retired in 1979 as the travel editor at the Star-Telegram. He received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Tarleton Alumni Association in 1983. He was the writer-in-residence at Tarleton at the time of his death.
  • The W.J. Wisdom Scholarship was established by the Tarleton Alumni Association to honor W. J. Wisdom. Mr. Wisdom was a native of Oklahoma, a 1937 graduate of John Tarleton Agricultural College, a Navy veteran of World War II, and an architect in the Houston area. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Physical Education.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Scholarship was established in February 1991 by the Tarleton Alumni Association. This scholarship is awarded to students who are the children or grandchildren of a former student of Tarleton State University.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship was established in May of 2019. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has a family member who is a Tarleton alumnus and who has an active membership in the Tarleton Alumni Association.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Dyess Veterans Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992. This scholarship was created by the Tarleton Alumni Association, this scholarship is awarded to a freshman ROTC member who has applied for a full ROTC scholarship to begin with the Sophomore year.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Baylor Nursing Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in Nursing at Tarleton State University.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association T.C. & Jill Granberry Scholarship was established in 1997 by the Tarleton Alumni Association. This scholarship honors two very good friends of Tarleton State University. This scholarship is awarded to a child or grandchild of a former student at Tarleton State University.
  • The Tarleton Aluni Association Jostens Scholarship was established by the Jostens Corporation, in cooperation with the Tarleton Alumni Association. Jostens provides the official University ring for Tarleton graduates.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Mickey & Stella Nix Maguire Scholarship was established in 1997 by a gift from Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Nix of Stephenville and the Tarleton Alumni Association. This scholarship honors two very good friends of Tarleton State University and is awarded to a child or grandchild of a Tarleton State University former student.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Gregory Scott Sultemeier Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a full time criminal justice major with a 3.0 GPA from Fredericksburg or other areas of the Texas Hill Country. If there are no applicants from these Texas areas in an academic year, the award will be given to any qualifying student from any area of the State.
  • The Tarleton Alumni Association Don Winn Scholarship was established to honor Mr. Don Winn, John Tarleton Agricultural College class of 1942. This scholarship was created to recognize his years of dedication and leadership to the Tarleton Alumni Association. This scholarship is awarded to students based on financial need, demographics, personal qualities and academic achievement.
