Dr. Weldon Newton, Mr. Joe Lane, and Mrs. Anita Lane

The Lewis and Ina Newton Memorial Scholarship was established by the children and descendants of the couple to honor their emphasis, patience, and persistence in assuring that each of their five children obtain a college degree. Long-time farmers and residents of the Cross Cut community in northern Brown County, all five of their children are graduates of Cross Plains High School. Three attended Tarleton State University as a junior college. All of their children went on to earned bachelor’s and other advance degrees from other Texas universities. Twenty-one descendants followed suit, attending Tarleton to earn part-time credit or bachelor’s and master’s degrees in succeeding years.
